May Meeting Wrap-Up

We had a great time at our May meeting; spending some time sharing a meal, playing some games (with fabulous prizes) and sharing our projects with each other!

Here are just a few of the amazing projects some of our guild members have completed or are working on:

At the June meeting we will be having a workshop/presentation on the "Modern Aesthetic".  Elizabeth B. will be talking to the group about what makes something "modern" and Jenn will be sharing a modern sewing project with us.

Xandi wants to remind you all that our WIP swap will wrap up in June.  If you took a WIP home in April, and have made something from it, please bring it to our June meeting for a little show and tell.  I cannot wait to see what everyone came up with!  For those who missed the kick-off, WIP's are "Works in Progress", those bits of things you have lying around that you don't think you will ever get to finishing.  Those who wanted to get their old WIP's off their hands brought them to the April meeting to pass on and have re-purposed.  The projects didn't have to start out as quilts and don't need to end as quilts.  If you took a WIP in April you still have time to turn it into whatever you want; a tote bag, journal cover, pin cushion, mug rug, mini quilt, place mat or anything else you can think of.  Just bring it with you to share at our June meeting!

As always, if you have something to share with the group, please bring it for Sew and Share!

Can't wait to see you all in June!

Make Welcome

At our April meeting Beth P. discussed the Make Welcome sewing group.  Here is some more information she forwarded and a link to their website and blog.

Here's a little more info about our refugee sewing group.  We are called Make Welcome and we currently have seven Burmese women who are learning to sew.  Three of them have been able to buy their own machines through our sewing machine sponsorship program.  We meet three times a month
(usually) and are working on a variety of projects including embellished hand towels, rice bag totes and pillows, and cloth napkin sets.  We've also made headbands and fabric flowers.  We are hoping to do a bit of simple clothing sewing and also some quilting.

To learn more about the group, you can visit the website http://makewelcome.org/

We update the blog several times a month with stories about what we're doing in class and also with information about refugees.

We welcome donations of fabric, thread (not too old), zippers, buttons, scissors, irons, and other useful sewing tools and notions.

Thanks so much.  Have a great day!
Beth
