Sujata Shah - Lecture and Class

Stories in Stitches: Kawandi-Siddi Quilt Class

Kawandi is a utilitarian quilt made by the African diaspora of India. Sujata will share step by step basic instructions for making a small, one of a kind Kawandi. In this workshop you will experience an intuitive process and make a unique and personalized patchwork.

During this workshop, Sujata will also share how she documents her memories and special events of life with stitches and the importance of stitching each day.


Class

Sujata Shah will lead this class on Saturday, April 30 1:00 - 5:00 pm.

This class is $50 for guild members and $60 for non-guild members.

Supply List

The thread, batting and needles suggestions are my choices but you can use whatever you have on hand.

Neutral color thread for basting

Fabric scissors

Embroidery needles – Bohin France Embroidery #7

Quilting thread - Wonderfil Specialty Thread - Spagetti Weight 12 Color - White or Ecru

22” X 22” Square piece of lightweight fabric for backing

21” X 21” Square thin batting - Quilter's Dream (request) Or- flannel or soft cotton fabric

Colorful lightweight, loosely woven fabric scraps. Try to avoid batiks as they are too hard to quilt through.

Prep for the workshop

Place the batting centered on the wrong side of the backing. Fold over the edges and baste back and the batting with 1/2" long stitchies. Refer to the image attached to this email.
