What a fun day!

Rotary cutters were rolling, sergers and sewing machines were flying, and irons were steaming!!  Today we made 100, YES, ONE HUNDRED pillowcases to donate to the Charlotte organization Beds For Kids.   http://www.bedsforkids.org

We had eleven members and 1 "cutie pie junior member" join us for a fun day of sewing, laughs and lots of productivity.

We hit the 50 pillowcase mark around noon and thought "Maybe we can make it to 75?".

Then we hit the 75 pillowcase mark and our "cutie pie junior member" proclaimed "I bet we can make it to 100!".

Encouraged and inspired we kept going until we made it all the way to 100!!!

Thank you so much to Springs Creative for donating the many bolts of cheerful fabric and to Carmel Presbyterian Church for letting us use their wonderful facilities.  Thank you, thank you!

We were also able to cut the fabrics for 50 more pillowcases and we will bring those kits to our next meeting.  The pillowcases are so fun and easy to make.  We hope to complete these 50 additional pillowcases soon and pass them along to new happy homes.

A Ribbon Winner!

CONGRATULATIONS to Elizabeth Phillippi for earning a ribbon at this weekend's Cabarrus quilt show.  Elizabeth's quilt won Honorable Mention in the Large Wall Quilt - Longarm/Midarm Machine Quilted category.  This was her very first entry into a quilt show. Way to go!!!

Her quilt was a beautiful scrappy storm at sea quilt that some of you got to see in person at one of our recent Sew & Tells.  Fellow modern guild member, Jenn Reeves  (Honu Quilting website), did the gorgeous machine quilting for the quilt.  What a great team.

The show runs through tomorrow (10/6) at the Cabarrus Arena in Concord, NC.  Hours on Saturday are 10-5.  And don't forget the Barnful of Quilts on Saturday...

Barnful of Quilts

Sari Bari

Thursday night one of our guests, Beth, shared her inspiring story about the organization Sari Bari.  Beth is a member of Blue Flax Quilters, a group of women that has made 2 quilts for this organization.  The quilts will be auctioned beginning on Monday, October 1 as part of the Sari Bari annual auction.

Here is an excerpt from the Sari Bari website:

"Sari Bari is a safe place of employment where women who have been exploited in the sex trade or who are vulnerable to trafficking can experience a new life in the making. The name "Sari Bari" comes from two symbols. A sari is the traditional clothing worn by women in India. In India, a sari represents the essence of womanhood. The word bari mean "house or home" in the Bengali language."

UPDATE: Mug Rug Swap

Since last month's workshop was on Foundation Paper Piecing, we'd love it if you would give paper piecing a try for your mug rug swap this month.

You can use one of the patterns Courtney gave you or give any other foundation paper piecing pattern a try. There are lots of free ones online. You can find a lot at 365 Quilt Blocks .

You could also try a tea cup and slice of cake pattern,

or this shop that has owls and other paper piecing patterns for sale.

Tallahassee Block
The Tallahassee Block (above) can be paper pieced. Here is the link for the template to print.

You can also print a basic diamond in a square template here.

Lots of options out there! It is not madatory to paper piece your mug rug but we hope you'll feel inspired to give it a try!
:)

Remember the mug rugs are due at the September 27 meeting.
For the list of participants and partners, see this post.

See you then!

September Swap- Mug Rugs!

It's swap time and our theme for September is Mug Rugs.
So what's a mug rug anyway?

Well, it's a small quilt - somewhere in between a coaster and a placemat. It's usually between 4" x 6" and 6" x 8" but the size is flexible.

What do you do with it? Well, it's a snack mat; a place to put your drink and some cookies.  It's also looks cute.

It's a great way to showcase some favorite fabrics, a small design or block or some hand-sewing skills.

Since Courtney did such a great job teaching foundation paper piecing last month, we would love for you to give paper piecing a try for this swap. It is not mandatory but it is FUN!

We hope you'll feel inspired and give it a try.
For more info on paper piecing and links to free patterns, click here

This will be a partnered swap. Names were put into a pot and drawn out two at a time. The two names became partners and you will make a mug rug for your partner.

Partners are:
Susan Austin & Jen Bland
Bianca Miller & Jennifer Mathis
Courtney Lyons & Liz Harris
Fran Lyons & Cindi Woody
Gail Toliver & Elizabeth Phillippi
Elyse Mullis & Karen Ernest
Kat Bierma & Kelleigh Bland
Joanie Page & Jennifer Mathis

Creating a flickr mosaic is optional. We'll have a tutorial on how to do this at the September meeting.

If you would like to create a flickr mosaic of the type of things you like to inspire your partner,  click HERE for a tutorial.

Guild Meeting This Thursday!

Hey everybody!
Just a reminder that our guild meeting is this Thursday- 6:00 PM at Morrison Regional Library.

Don't forget to bring your pincushion if you did not bring yours for your partner swap last month.

Keep in mind we will be electing new officers and a new board in June. Be thinking how you can best serve our guild and what position you are most interested in.

Our mini workshops this month will be on alternative binding options for mini and wall quilts led by Joyce, and we'll have a hand quilting how-to session led by Elizabeth.

**Please bring a small quilt sandwich, scissors, a thimble, a needle and hand quilting thread to the meeting to get some hands-on tips and practice.

Also on the agenda: What does Modern Quilting Mean to You? We'll discuss modern quilting and get the details on a new modern quilting challenge.

We'll also have some great giveaways thanks to Westminster Fibers.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday night!

I Need Your Help!

We need two more of you wonderful members to teach a mini session at our meeting next week!

We are going to have three small group sessions on specialty quilt blocks or techniques. You will need to bring a block to demonstrate your technique and your sewing machine along with any supplies, etc. needed to demonstrate how to make it.

Who can help us out? You will be demonstrating your block or technique 3 times in small groups so it does not need to be especially complicated or long!

Who would like to help out? Send me an email please! ellisonlane@gmail.com or cltmqg@gmail.com.

Also, please make sure you make and bring a nametag for the meeting next week. Everyone with a nametag will be entered to win some great fabric from Free Spirit / Westminster Fibers!

See you on the 29th at 6:00 at Morrison Library!

February Meeting and Blog Roll

Hey everybody!

Our meeting is tomorrow night 2-23-12!
Morrison Regional Library at 6:00.

We have a great mini workshop tomorrow night on turning the perfect circle and crazy curves. Many thanks to Joyce and Elizabeth for teaching!

The Sew-In was so much fun last Saturday. Thanks to all that came and a BIG thanks to those of you that helped me sort my charm squares. That was a huge job and I really, really appreciate it!

Our next sew-in will be Saturday April 28 so mark your calendars now.

We finished the two charity quilt tops and backs and now just need two wonderful people to quilt them. Who would like to step up and help us out? I know I can count on two of you!
I will bring the quilts to the meeting tomorrow night.

Don't forget to work on your pincushion for your swap partner. If you haven't made the mosiac yet, the tutorial for the inspirational mosaic is in our Flickr group.

Modern Star Challenge blocks are due tomorrow night!!! It is very important that you bring your blocks as we will be showing them off and dividing them up. Two very lucky people will be going home with a stack of blocks and some Echo fat quarters to make quilts. What fun! I cannot wait to see everyone's blocks. After the reveal tomorrow, please upload pictures of your block to the CLTMQG Flickr group.

Have you heard about QuiltCon? I'll be sharing details with you tomorrow night.

And finally, do you have a personal blog you would like us to add to your blog roll? We love to feature CLT MQG members blogs on our home page. Send me the link to your blog, and I will add it to the blog roll!

See you all tomorrow night. Remember, our meeting is at 6:00 NOT 6:30 like last month.

Sew-In Saturday and Modern Star Block Challenge!

Hey friends,

Don't forget that our sew-in Saturday is this weekend from noon-4:00. We are meeting at Carmel Presbyterian Church2048 Carmel Road  Charlotte, NC 28226
(704) 366-5114

Bring your sewing machine, a power strip, an extension cord,
your sewing projects and whatever else you need to have fun!
If a few of us could bring an iron and ironing board too,
that would be great.

Let's plan to finish the Habitat fabric charity quilts as well.!

Get ready for our next meeting on Thursday, February 23 at 6:00.
(Morrison Regional Library)
We will have a great mini workshop on curves and circles!

Are you working on your Modern Star Challenge blocks?
Remember that you need to complete 2 12.5" blocks by our meeting
on the 23rd.  There are several tutorials in the Flickr group to inspire
you but please feel free to use your own ideas and come up with
something original if you would like.

I will bring the extra Echo fabric to the sew-in if you didn't have a chance to
share your FQ with someone and would like to.

See you soon!

Modern Star Challenge

Are you giving some thought to your modern star challenge block?

Remember that you can use your fat quarter and white. (If you shared some of the fat quarter fabric with a friend, you can use both and white.)

Finished blocks should be 12.5" x 12.5".  Please bring them to the February meeting!

Our sew in Saturday is coming up on February 18. I think we are going to have a great turn out! If you did not sign up and would like to come, please let me know so I can make sure we have enough tables and chairs set up.

The sew in is at Carmel Presbyterian Church, noon - 4:00 PM on 2/18/12.   We will meet in the Ligon building by the playground. See you then!

Our next meeting is Thursday, February 26 at 6:00. A big thanks to Joyce Mullis for teaching us all about turning the perfect circle and crazy curves! The Modern Star block challenge winners will be revealed too, and I can't wait to see all of your blocks.

If you are participating in the pin cushion swap, you should have received your partner information from Karen. Please make an inspirational mosaic and post it in the Flickr group for your partner to have some direction and ideas. A tutorial on how to go about this is in the Flickr group as well.

Have a great week!

Zip Pouches and January Meeting Recap

Hey Friends!

What a fun meeting tonight. I so enjoyed seeing all of you and was so happy to see so many new faces too! It is a great feeling having our Modern Quilt Guild grow and thrive!

First off, if you are taking part in our Modern Star Block Challenge,
be sure to make your modern star block with the following requirements:

  • 2 blocks finished at a 12.5" x 12.5"  size.
  • Background fabric: white
  • Create a modern star block using any pattern you like.
  • Bring your finished block to the February Meeting.

We will put each participant's name in a hat and two winners will each take home 17 blocks plus three fat quarters of Echo to finish out their quilts.

Be creative, be modern and have fun!

SEW-IN SATURDAY!
Carmel Presbyterian Church Ligon Hall
2048 Carmel Road  Charlotte, NC 28226-5098
(704) 366-5114

Park by the playground. The building is on your left.

February 18, 12:00-4:00.

Come for all of it or some of it. We would love to have you join us. If you didn't RSVP at the meeting, please let me know if you can make it. I want to have adequate sewing space. Bring your own project, sewing machine, extension cord and power strip. If someone could bring an iron and ironing board, so we have 2 that would be great. Also, another cutting mat and rotary cutter would be nice too.

Let's plan on finishing those Habitat charity quilts!

We'll have prizes and snacks and lots of fun. Hopefully we'll get some sewing done too! :)

Thanks Karen for a great and creative swap! It was super fun. If you would like to participate in the pin cushion swap in March, please email Karen so she can add you to the list. She will email you your secret partner. It would be most helpful for you to create a mosaic in Flickr of your pincushion favorites for your partner's inspiration. You can find out how to do that HERE.

Now, thanks for all of the kind words about the zip pouch tutorial. I am so glad you enjoyed it. Here are a few tips from tonight's demonstration:

4 pieces of fabric (6" x 8") 2 for lining, 2 for outer
2 pieces of batting or medium-weight interfacing
2 pieces of outer fabric cut 2" x 2.5" to make tabs (folded and pressed so edges meet to give you a finished edge)

  • cut your zipper so that it is about 1/2" shorter than your fabric (on both ends)
  • place your fabric lining and outer fabric, right sides together with the zipper in between to make your sandwich when you sew the zipper on.
  • when you sew your pouch closed, right sides together, UNZIP your zipper first!
  • leave about a 2.5" - 3"  opening in the lining (backstitch at the beginning and end of your opening) when sewing your right sides of the pouch together.
  • when you sew the right sides together, fold your zipper on itself towards the outer fabric (this makes more sense when you actually do it)
  • when you sew your right sides together, sew right next to your tabs but not through them! You won't be able to see them but you'll be able to feel them.
  • Use a 1/2" seam to sew your lining (right sides together) and about a 1/4" seam for the outer fabric (right sides together.)
  • Press your fabric before you turn it right side out.
OK, hope those tips help! I will post them in the CLTMQG Flickr group too for easy reference.
Be sure to check out Anna Graham of Noodleheads' gathered clutch tutorial for more information and instructions.

Good luck! Email me if you have questions. :)

Looking forward to a great meeting in February and hope to see you at the sew-in day.
